Guide to Outdoor Activities in Kansas City

Kansas City is a hidden gem of outdoor adventure in the midwest. The Blue River Watershed has created a number of unique landforms including limestone rock formations, rolling hills, and high plateaus. Many first-timers to the city are surprised to see such a variety of topography and options for outdoor recreation in and around the city.


Mountain Biking & Hiking

In the past 20-years, there has been a commitment by individuals and the municipalities that make up the Kansas City metro to develop world-class mountain biking trails that are multi-use and can be used by bikers, hiking enthusiasts, and trail runners. 


Paved Exercise Trails

Many of the paved trail systems in the Kansas City metropolitan area connect to other trail systems. The variety of trails range from wide concrete trails that wind along rivers to joint-friendly asphalt trails that wrap around a number of parks in the area. All of these trails are friendly to pedestrians, pets, and cyclists. Many of the trails also have interesting historical markers along the trail, so you can learn some KC history while you get out and enjoy the many sunny days here in KC.  


Rock Climbing

The limestone rock formations around Kansas City lend themselves to some great rock climbing in the area. The rock climbing community in Kansas City is active in establishing new routes and stays active in all weather with the number of indoor options available in the city. 


Camping

There are numerous state parks with well-appointed campsites within an hour or two of Kansas City. Many of these state parks include lake access or their own trail systems. Reservations are made online, but there are usually some last-minute reservations available too.
